The following Literacy Benchmarks guide our literacy program:

 

  • Work recognition, analysis and fluency
    • See, hear, and say the basic sounds of the English language
    • Match consonant and vowel sounds to appropriate letters, say the common sounds of most letters
    • Identify and name letters of alphabet
    • Identify, produce and say rhyming words in response to an oral prompt

  • Vocabulary Expansion
    • Use words to describe and name people, places and things
    • See, hear, and say vocabulary words from stories that are read
    • Use words to describe location, size, color, shape and direction
    • Use words to describe action

 

  • Speaking, Listening and Viewing

    • Speaking
      • Speak clearly and with a volume that is easily heard
      • Demonstrate literal comprehension by asking and answering questions about narrative and informal text
      • Make predictions from illustrations and story content
      • Follow 2 to 5 step directions

    • Listening
      • Listen to a story from beginning to end without interruption

    • Comprehension
      • Demonstrate literal comprehension by asking and answering questions about narrative and informational text.
      • Make predictions from illustrations and story content
      • Write, draw, or act out a response that demonstrates comprehension

    • Literature
      • Identify main characters and story events and actions.
      • Retell familiar stories using beginning, middle and end

  • Writing

    • Spelling, Grammar and Usage
      • Use knowledge of basic phonics to spell (inventive spelling)
      • Correctly form upper and lower case letters in own name
